One of the things I miss the most about editing is the opportunity to share the exciting things I’ve read. When you edit a fiction magazine, you can point out the great new authors, or the marvelous short story by a master of the form. I lost that platform when I gave up editing to concentrate on my writing.

Of course, the difference here is that I’m not limited to short fiction or fiction at all. What you’ll find under each month’s heading are the stories, articles, essays, novels and non-fiction books that impressed me in the preceding four weeks. I’ll try to provide links whenever possible.

What you won’t find here will be critical commentary or negative reviews. There are too many good things to read in this world; I generally don’t finish something I don’t enjoy.

So anything I list here, with or without commentary, is something I enjoyed. I hope you will too.

Recommended Reading List: March 2024

I am finishing this up very late. I saved the articles and books in piles, meaning to finish my recommended reading list as I read. But the events of the spring and early summer prevented me from doing much more than my writing and the work I needed to do to keep my business alive. […]

We are slowly getting through what was a very difficult eight months. In addition to Dean’s injury and the shooting at UNLV, we had issues of our own at WMG. A long-time employee turned out to be someone other than who we thought she was. The mess she left behind after her dismissal has been […]

Not as much reading this month as I had hoped, but then, this is the month that I didn’t sleep either, because we were dealing with the aftermath of Dean’s fall and surgery. I’m recommending a video as well as a few books and articles, which I will explain below. Much of what I did […]

I got a lot less reading done in September. School started, and we were reading a play a week. I had some other projects to finish as well, which required reading. Plus we actually had some theater to attend, and the Las Vegas Aces were in the playoffs (and I had playoff tickets for the […]

I am slowly catching up on the Recommended Reading Lists. The books are stacked all over my office in date order. The fall was too hectic to get to the lists, and what I did have would go live unexpectedly, so I had to delete. I’m now rebuilding, without anything scheduled at all, leaving them […]

Special Holiday Recommended Reading List

November 24, 2023November 26, 2023Kristine Kathryn RuschLeave a Comment on Special Holiday Recommended Reading List

I started the Holiday Recommended Reading List when I realized that I point out all the great holiday stories in January, after the season has passed. I am always a month behind in reporting what I read, and that will continue as I catch up on the Recommended Reading List. I got behind this year, […]

Recommended Reading List: July, 2023

July was strange. I had a lot of dental and other medical appointments which ate up a lot of time. Some of the stuff that happened forced me to rest afterwards or deal with migraines. I’ve had migraines my whole life, so I can judge how “bad” they are. These were bad enough that I […]

A lot of reading in June, but mostly for various editing projects. One of them, the Holiday Spectacular, will have a Kickstarter that goes live in October. Before that, though, you can sample our Christmas in July promotion of the Spectacular with the compilation of last year’s stories. What I did read outside of that […]

I’m still behind on posting these, but I’m catching up, despite emergency vet visits and five dentist visits for me so far. (That’s so fun. Not.) I’m getting there, though. May was a hectic month as well, with the end of school, the end of a cold, another workshop, and lots of visitors. I still […]

Wow, am I late on this. No, I have not dropped the Recommended Reading list, but it was the one thing that could go by the wayside during one of my busiest springs ever. So I have two months of reading list to get to. I hope to finish this by the end of June…before […]
