No Joke https://kriswrites.com/2025/04/01/no-joke/ https://kriswrites.com/2025/04/01/no-joke/#respond Tue, 01 Apr 2025 23:31:36 +0000 https://kriswrites.com/?p=36334 I know, I know. It’s April Fool’s Day. And Dean Wesley Smith decided to launch a Kickstarter anyway. It’s for his Poker Boy series, which is one of my favorites. If you back it, you’ll get four Poker Boy ebooks and whatever stretch goals we hit. And writers, there’s some really great rewards here. So take a look.

And if you’re uncertain, at least watch the video I did. Enjoy! (Oh, and head to the Kickstarter here.)

38 Ebooks for $30…Going…Going…Nearly Gone! https://kriswrites.com/2025/03/25/38-ebooks-for-30-going-going-nearly-gone/ https://kriswrites.com/2025/03/25/38-ebooks-for-30-going-going-nearly-gone/#respond Tue, 25 Mar 2025 14:48:13 +0000 https://kriswrites.com/?p=36289 That’s right! 38 ebooks, all fantasy by amazing authors, available in a bundle of bundles for $30.

Writers like Thomas K. Carpenter, Anthea Sharp, and Ann Gimpel have put entire series in this bundle. Other writers have given you three books or more as a taste of what they can do, writers like Lisa Silverthorne and T. Thorn Coyle. You’ll find marvelous books by Brigid Collins, DeAnna Knippling, and Robert Jeschonek. I curated this bundle and included four books in my Faerie Justice series. Dean included all four of his Bryant Street collections.

These are amazing, high quality fantasy novels that’ll keep you reading long into the spring.

But this opportunity disappears on Thursday evening Pacific time, so hurry over to Storybundle to get yours. And maybe toss in a bit of money to support our charity, World Central Kitchen, and feed a few people while you feed your soul.

The video designed by Lisa Silverthorne might entice you as well…

Time For The Big Time Storybundle! https://kriswrites.com/2024/08/21/time-for-the-big-time-storybundle/ https://kriswrites.com/2024/08/21/time-for-the-big-time-storybundle/#comments Wed, 21 Aug 2024 19:38:03 +0000 https://kriswrites.com/?p=35318 I know you’re all looking for a great read to get you through the last two weeks of summer—unofficial summer, that is. In the States, summer ends with Labor Day, even though the official end is September 23. But life and work and all those supposedly non-summery things will start getting in the way of those beach reads. Or in the case of Las Vegas, the sitting-inside-and-basking-in-the-AC reads.

Well, I have the answer for you. It is the Big Time Bundle 2024, which I curated. It has great fiction from Lisa Silverthorne, Ron Collins with Jeff Collins, Kathryn Kaleigh, Robert Jeschonek, Douglas Smith, Dean Wesley Smith, Michael Stackpole, Kevin J. Anderson, with Doug Beason, and WMG Publishing, Inc.‘s Holiday Spectacular Time Travel anthology.

My own contribution is one of my most favorite. The Gallery of His Dreams was nominated (or won) every award that existed in sf at the time. I wrote the story during a rough time, and it was a great escape for me. I hope it will be for you.

The bundle will exist for two more weeks before fading away. So you’ll run out of…time! Yes, time! So get yours now.

Thumper’s Quest https://kriswrites.com/2024/07/13/thumpers-quest/ https://kriswrites.com/2024/07/13/thumpers-quest/#respond Sat, 13 Jul 2024 19:00:43 +0000 https://kriswrites.com/?p=35176 I put together a fun video for Pulphouse Magazine just in time for the annual subscription renewal Kickstarter, which began Tuesday. I had initially set this post to go up automatically on Tuesday, but it didn’t for some reason. Sigh.

So I’m letting you know now. We’ve hit four stretch goals so far, and we’re trying to hit another over the weekend. (120 backers by Sunday.) This means that if you back the Kickstarter, you’ll get your six issue subscription with really great fiction inside and four anthologies. Writers will get several opportunities to send stories to Pulphouse which is truly special because the magazine is closed to submissions most of the time.

I also put together the Kickstarter video, which is fun, but not as much fun as this one. Yep, I’m playing with iMovie only because I haven’t had the time (literally) to relearn a much more sophisticated program. I’m getting there. I’m hoping my time frees up soon.

In the meantime, I need two things from you. The second thing first: check out the Kickstarter. Lots of great rewards and even more wonderful fiction. First thing second: watch the video below. Enjoy!

Lots of Learning! https://kriswrites.com/2024/06/23/lots-of-learning/ https://kriswrites.com/2024/06/23/lots-of-learning/#respond Sun, 23 Jun 2024 23:27:30 +0000 https://kriswrites.com/?p=35108

Oh, my goodness, I’ve had fun with videos this spring. Once again, I’m the one doing the videos for WMG Publishing, Inc., a fact that makes me very happy. Our videos lacked voice for the past several years. (I’ll share an example of that later in the week.) I did the video for the Ghost of a Chance Kickstarter, which you can see if you click here. I also did this fun little rebranding video, which shows writers (and the rest of you) how important branding is to book buying.

The point of the Ghost of a Chance Kickstarter was to put the proper branding (covers etc) on the Ghost of a Chance books. We had gone through several branding attempts, and none of them worked. (Watch the video.) Now we’re all happy with the new look. These are Dean’s novels, and they’re fantasy romance or, as the new subgenre is called, romantasy. If you like romance with your fantasy or fantasy with your romance (or peanut butter with your chocolate…wait! Wrong ad!) click here.

One of the Kickstarter rewards is a class on finding your perfect reader, which is what the above video is about. That’s just one illustration on how to find a reader for your work. That online class will only be available in the Kickstarter. And… with every reward, you’ll get the five Ghost of a Chance novels, which are a lot of fun and well worth reading.

So…that’s one bit of learning. Here’s another.

As many of you know, we’re doing Prepare Ahead classes to accompany our in-person Anthology workshop in August. We’re going for some major subgenres this year, which can be hard to write for if you don’t understand them. We just finished up Military SF, and now we’re moving to a favorite of mine, Fantasy Regency.

Anthea Sharp will be editing this volume and she has a lot of insights on how to write fantasy Regency. Yes, there are rules. But those rules aren’t as strict as they’d be if you were trying to write the Regency that fits into the romance genre.

We’ve opened up the Prepare Ahead classes to everyone. If you want to learn this subgenre, and actually write for Anthea, then join this workshop. If you join today, you get a full week to learn this material. If you join later in the week, well, then…you only have until next Sunday.

I’m writing a story for this one too. It’s not my usual writing genre, but it is one that I read a lot. So I’ll be learning alongside you. Click here to join the online class.

And finally, our next Art of the Novella class is about to start. This one is also fantasy. You will learn how to write a fantasy novella which is, believe me, a heck of a trick. You have to keep readers engaged at the longer length, but you can’t commit 100K novel or even a novel series. And if your novella is in a series, well then, there’s a trick to that too.

Join us to learn all the tricks and to have fun doing it. At the end of the class, you’ll be writing a novella which I will read and comment on.

Here’s the link for that.

So…lots of learning this week (plus a fun video and some good reading).

Oh, and PS, if you want some insight into the above video, head over to my Patreon page. I have a couple of posts on the differences between this video and the actual Kickstarter video…and why those differences exist.

The Beginning of My Video Fun https://kriswrites.com/2024/06/18/the-beginning-of-my-video-fun/ https://kriswrites.com/2024/06/18/the-beginning-of-my-video-fun/#respond Tue, 18 Jun 2024 21:36:24 +0000 https://kriswrites.com/?p=35077 As many of you know, we’ve been talking for years about taking WMG Publishing Inc into the media world. There’s all kinds of corporate decisions to be made, and now that we have a staff in place that actually supports the changes, we’re moving forward at lightspeed. For a while, I’ll do the videos and the audio, but some of that will get handed off to someone else. Or maybe just the posting on social media part.

Right now, though, I have a Kickstarter video to share with you. I did this for Dean Wesley Smith’s brand-new Kickstarter. The Kickstarter is for Dean’s Ghost of a Chance series, which we’ve rebranded. It needed the rebranding. The series was romantasy before anyone knew what that was. (Wait until you see my later video—the one that shows the rebranding. That’s coming soon.)

It’s been seven years since I’ve done videos, handing them off because of illness to someone else. That someone else had no voice whatsoever so our videos went from fun to bland. We’re back to fun. I still can’t do much of what I want on these videos, because I need to relearn the programs, so I simply did this inside of iMovie as practice.

I’m happy with the result.

Those of you who like fantasy and ghosts and romance will love these books. They’re a good quick read. You can get all five books in the series as ebooks with any reward in the Kickstarter. There are a lot of great other rewards as well, so scroll on through and see what appeals to you.

I suspect you’ll find something that you really really want.

Take a peek.

A Great Writing Storybundle https://kriswrites.com/2024/03/28/a-great-writing-storybundle/ https://kriswrites.com/2024/03/28/a-great-writing-storybundle/#respond Thu, 28 Mar 2024 23:51:47 +0000 https://kriswrites.com/?p=34609 I curated a new Storybundle for writers (or their lovely friends who want to give the bundle as a gift). The bundle started today and will continue for just a few weeks. I’m really excited about this one. Each book builds on the others…and there’s even a special pop-up workshop here.

Try to draft a new variation on what I wrote for the Storybundle website, just let me reprint it here:

THE 2024 WRITE STUFF BUNDLE

The 2024 Write Stuff Bundle – Curated by Kristine Kathryn Rusch

Every year, I put together a bundle on writing. Every year, I find new concerns and ways to help writers market their work. I also find inspiration books on craft and keeping the faith as writers struggle with the blank page.

This year’s bundle has four distinct elements.

First, the all-important craft. J. Daniel Sawyer teaches you how to put words on the page each and every day. Megabestselling fiction writer and long-time editor Dean Wesley Smith helps you make those words compelling and your stories page-turners, with his StoryBundle exclusive Make Me Read. Novelist and short story writer Dayle A. Dermatis shows you how to use history to inform your fantasy novels, and prolific short story writer Douglas Smith explores the craft of short fiction.

But Doug is our crossover book, because his brand-new edition of Playing The Short Game doesn’t just focus on craft. It has pages and pages of new material for marketing short fiction in 2024. And it’s exclusive to this bundle!

However, I could also say that Tracey Cooper-Posey provides our crossover book, because she also discusses craft and business with the all-important addition of living well while doing so.

Anthea L. Sharp shows us one of the newest ways to grow an audience online by using Kickstarter. Her Kickstarter For Authors is one of the best best-practices book in the business.

Mark Leslie Lefebvre’s StoryBundle exclusive A Book in Hand teaches us that with the right techniques, the old-fashioned techniques of in-person book sales (with actual paper books!) still works well.

Of course, none of this works well if you don’t get to the actual writing or try the business suggestions. Often an inability to do what you really want to do comes from a fear of success. We have a pop-up online workshop that will help you figure out if you suffer from this sometimes paralyzing attitude.

Once you’ve finished the pop-up, take a gander at the Bundle on Maximizing Your Success, which includes three of my short books on making money, success secrets, and negotiation.

And after you’ve finished all of that, take a look at B.A. Paul’s inspiring creative nonfiction book on her journey from unpublished to publication.

Lots to read (and learn), lots to absorb here. This information will get you started or motivate you to return to the writing you love, as well as helping you figure out how to market what you’ve written.

In addition, we’ve chosen a charity that helps people with disabilities join the online gaming community. The key word here is community, since so many people have become homebound. They need an outlet, and Able Gamers tailors gaming consoles and other equipment to individuals so that they can participate, make friends, and spend time with others, without leaving their homes.

So as you get all of this wisdom from the bundle, toss a few dollars at Able Gamers on the way out. We appreciate it! – Kristine Kathryn Rusch
