Well, Dave, collections sell better when you let people know they’re out there. So networking does help. After all, a writer never knows all of his fans, so being able to reach them via the social networks is a good way to do so. And yep, you’re right; comments are networking. 🙂

Your comments did help. Thanks so much!

A side issue is that my only book (so far) is a short story collection, and they typically don’t sell well, so social networking isn’t much of a help there. You have to have something of broad interest to guide people to.

I’m hoping that if I sell a novel at some point, the social networking will become more relevant, and the great part, as I told you, is that my website, blog, Twitter account, and Facebook page are already in place. Any writer who thinks they could one day come in handy should make sure they get a good head start establishing them.

Oh, wait — are these comments networking, too?

Dave

“How has online networking helped/hurt your business?”

“I think writers can survive without much of a web presence. What matters is the story itself.”

“I like to think of the Internet as a firehose. You can’t drink all of it at once, and if you do, it’s gonna hurt.” (thanks, Thomas)

Hi, Kris:

Very nice wrap up to the topic. I’ve selected a few statements above that resonate with me.

I think online networking is in its infancy, and really so is the internet. As this new media grows and changes the world of comunication online networking is an area to keep a close watch.

Thanks

Russ

I showed them how I use twitter, facebook and my blog. But as Neil Gaiman said, “it can be a timesink.”
